She came in six days before her wedding. Not one day before, not three days before — six days before. And she wanted a deep, golden tan.
We had a very gentle conversation about timing.
Spray tans before major events are one of the things I love helping clients with, because when they go right, they go really right. You look healthy, glowing, your dress fits differently, your teeth look brighter. It’s one of those treatments where the payoff is immediate and obvious.
But there is a right way to do this and a wrong way, and the difference between the two is almost entirely timing and prep. Let me give you the full picture.
The Timing Question (This Is the Most Important Part)
For a major event like a wedding, the ideal spray tan window is two to three days before. Not the day before, and definitely not the morning of.
Here’s why: a fresh spray tan has a slightly processed smell and can yield a brass-adjacent cast that softens beautifully after your first shower. That first shower — also known as the warm-water rinse typically happens about two to four hours after a rapid tan — is when the clear chemical, DHA, is done doing the work. 18-24 hours later, you take your first soap shower and see the natural golden tone you’re picturing.
Getting your tan two to three days out means you’ve had that warm water rinse, first soap shower, the color has developed and evened out, and any minor imperfections have had time to be addressed if needed.
If someone insists on getting tanned the day before their event, we can make it work — but they need to be realistic that the color they see walking out of our studio is not the final color.
Prep Is Everything
The single biggest factor in how a spray tan turns out — besides the product and the technique — is how you prepared your skin.
Exfoliate thoroughly twenty-four to forty-eight hours before your appointment. This means a physical exfoliating scrub in the shower, paying extra attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists — the areas where skin is thicker and tends to absorb more color. A dry skin brush before you step in also helps.
Shave or wax before your appointment, not after. Ideally at least twenty-four hours before, so any irritation settles.
Come in with completely clean, product-free skin. No deodorant, no lotion, no perfume, no makeup. Anything sitting on the skin creates a barrier between the tan solution and your skin.
What to Wear and What to Do After
Wear loose, dark clothing to your appointment. A maxi dress or loose pants and a flowing top are ideal. Avoid anything tight around the waistband, bra straps, or socks — pressure on skin while the tan develops can cause uneven lines.
Avoid sweating, swimming, rain, and anything that touches your skin for the development period of two to four hours post spray. Avoid long showers, hot baths, pools, and the ocean for the life of your tan.
Moisturize daily after your warm water rinse and first soap shower. Hydrated skin holds a tan significantly longer. We have excellent tan-extending moisturizers in the studio that we can send you home with.
How Long Will It Last?
A spray tan typically lasts five to nine days with proper care. Skin naturally exfoliates, so the tan fades gradually rather than all at once. If you’re maintaining well — moisturizing, avoiding long hot showers, skipping the exfoliating scrub post-tan — you can stretch it further.
For longer vacations or events that span multiple days, we sell a variety of tan extenders.
The bottom line: spray tanning is one of the most satisfying quick-turnaround services we offer. It’s healthy for your skin (no UV exposure), quick, and the results are genuinely beautiful when done right. We’d love to help you glow for whatever’s coming up.
