This is a conversation I have almost every week, and I have strong opinions — not because one is objectively better than the other, but because they are genuinely different things that suit different people and different lifestyles.
Both are great. Both have real tradeoffs. And the right answer for you depends on some specific things about your life that are worth thinking through honestly.
What Lash Extensions Actually Are (and What They Require)
Lash extensions are individual synthetic fibers — varying in length, diameter, and curl — bonded to your natural lashes one by one with a semi-permanent adhesive. The result is a full, classic to dramatic lash look that looks styled from the moment you wake up.
They look incredible. I won’t pretend otherwise. A fresh set of lash extensions is one of the most transformative things you can do to your appearance in under two hours.
Here’s what they require: fills every two to three weeks as your natural lashes shed and the extensions grow out with them. Careful cleansing around the eye area — no oil-based products near the lashes, no rubbing. Sleeping on your back or on a silk pillowcase. Being conscious of the lashes in the pool, in the shower, and at the gym.
They are a commitment. And clients who are not prepared for that commitment end up with patchy, grown-out extensions that look worse than no extensions at all.
What a Lash Lift Is (and Why I Recommend It More Often Than People Expect)
A lash lift is a chemical treatment applied to your natural lashes that lifts them from the root and sets them in a curled position — similar to what a good eyelash curler does, but permanent for the life of the lash cycle.
Combined with a tint, a lash lift makes your natural lashes look like they are always curled, always dark, and in some cases significantly longer-looking (because they’re no longer growing straight out — they’re lifting up and out).
The maintenance is essentially zero. You can swim, sleep on your face, rub your eyes (gently — but still), and use whatever eye products you want. You just have to avoid getting them wet for the first twenty-four hours after the treatment.
A lash lift and tint lasts six to eight weeks and is one appointment. For many clients, this is the right answer — the one that gives them the most improvement with the least lifestyle disruption.
How to Decide
A few questions worth answering honestly.
How much maintenance are you actually willing to do? If the answer is ‘not much,’ a lash lift is almost certainly the better fit.
Are you a stomach sleeper? If yes, extensions are going to be a frustrating experience. The pillowcase will take them out faster than gravity.
Do you swim regularly or work out intensely? Extensions hold up to water, but repeated exposure accelerates the breakdown of the adhesive. Lash lifts are entirely unaffected.
Do you want truly dramatic length and volume, or just better-looking natural lashes? If you’re after a significant fullness upgrade, extensions can do things a lift cannot. If you want your existing lashes to look their best, a lift is likely sufficient.
Are you willing to come in every few weeks? If your schedule is unpredictable and you know you’re likely to push fills out too long, your extensions will suffer. A lash lift removes that variable entirely.
The Answer I Give Most Often
For clients who are on the fence, I usually suggest starting with a lash lift. It gives you a clear picture of how much better your lashes can look with minimal upkeep. If you try it and want more, extensions will be waiting.
For clients who love the drama of a full extension set and are prepared to maintain them, extensions are genuinely wonderful and worth the upkeep.
Either way — come in and let’s look at your natural lashes together. That conversation will make the answer clearer than any quiz you’ll find online.
