Waxing from Brows to Legs: What to Expect and How to Prep

Let’s have an honest conversation about waxing. Yes, it involves pulling hair out by the roots. No, it’s not painless. But at Raise The Bar Med Spa in Gilbert, we’ve refined our waxing services to be as comfortable as possible while delivering results that make the brief discomfort worthwhile. Because there’s something incredibly liberating about smooth skin that lasts for weeks, not days.

I think we need to address the elephant in the room first: the pain factor. Everyone’s tolerance is different, and different areas have different sensitivity levels. Your upper lip might make your eyes water while your legs barely register. But here’s what our regular waxing clients will tell you – the first time is usually the worst, and it gets easier every time. The hair grows back finer and sparser, and you develop a tolerance. Plus, the results last so much longer than shaving that most people find the trade-off worth it.

Understanding the Waxing Process

When you wax, you’re not just removing the hair you can see – you’re pulling it out from the root, which sits below the skin’s surface. This is why waxed skin feels so incredibly smooth and why the results last 3-6 weeks depending on your hair growth cycle. When hair does grow back, it has a naturally tapered end rather than the blunt end created by shaving, so it feels softer and looks finer.

At Raise The Bar, we use both hard and soft wax. The wax is heated to the perfect temperature – warm enough to be effective but never hot enough to burn. It’s applied in the direction of hair growth, and then quickly removed against the direction of growth. Quick and efficient, like ripping off a band-aid.

Preparing for Your Appointment

The most important preparation factor is hair length. You need about a quarter-inch of growth – roughly the length of a grain of rice. This usually means not shaving for about two weeks before your appointment. I know that can feel uncomfortable, especially if you’re used to shaving daily, but without enough hair for the wax to grip, we can’t get effective results.

For 48 hours before your appointment, avoid any harsh exfoliation, retinoids, or acids on the areas being waxed. These can make your skin more sensitive and prone to lifting (where the top layer of skin comes off with the wax – not dangerous but uncomfortable and unsightly).

The day of your appointment, shower and clean the area to be waxed, but skip the lotion and oils. These create a barrier that prevents the wax from adhering properly. Wear comfortable, loose clothing, especially if you’re getting a bikini or Brazilian wax. Tight clothes rubbing on freshly waxed skin is not pleasant.

Consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment if you’re concerned about discomfort. Some clients also find that scheduling around their menstrual cycle helps – you tend to be more sensitive during your period, so booking for the week after might be more comfortable.

A Tour of Our Waxing Menu

Let’s go through each area we wax, what to expect, and any special considerations.

Eyebrows are often where people start their waxing journey. It’s quick, the results are immediately visible, and perfectly shaped brows can transform your entire face. We’ll consult with you about shape – following your natural arch, creating more definition, or cleaning up unruly brows. The skin around your eyes might be red and slightly puffy immediately after, but this usually subsides within an hour.

Upper lip and chin waxing is incredibly popular and so much more effective than constantly bleaching or plucking individual hairs. The upper lip is sensitive, and your eyes will probably water – that’s totally normal. The smooth result lasts for weeks, and over time, many clients notice their hair grows back finer and less noticeable.

Arm waxing might seem unusual if you’ve never considered it, but for those with dark or thick arm hair, it’s life-changing. No more feeling self-conscious in sleeveless tops. The arms aren’t particularly sensitive, making this a good option for waxing newbies who want to start with something less intimidating than a bikini wax.

Underarm waxing is a game-changer for those tired of daily shaving and the inevitable stubble by evening. It’s more sensitive than arms but less than bikini area. The results last 3-4 weeks, and many clients find their hair grows back finer and sparser over time. Plus, no more razor burn or dark shadow from hair under the skin.

Leg waxing – whether half leg or full leg – gives you weeks of smooth skin. It’s less painful than most people expect because the leg skin isn’t as sensitive. The main challenge is the time commitment – full legs can take 45 minutes to an hour. But when you’re smooth for a month instead of stubbly the day after shaving? Worth it.

Bikini waxing comes in various styles. A basic bikini wax removes hair that would be visible in a swimsuit. A French bikini goes further in and includes some hair removal from the labia. A Brazilian removes everything (though some clients leave a small strip or triangle in front). Yes, it’s intimate. Yes, it’s uncomfortable the first time. But our technicians are complete professionals who do this all day – there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

Back waxing is increasingly popular with men, especially during pool season in Arizona. It’s actually one of the less painful areas to wax because back skin isn’t very sensitive. The smooth results last 4-6 weeks, much better than the stubble that appears days after shaving (if you can even reach all the areas to shave).

During Your Appointment

When you arrive, we’ll take you to a private treatment room. For body waxing, you’ll undress the necessary areas and position yourself on our comfortable treatment table. We provide draping for modesty, and our technicians are experts at making you feel as comfortable as possible.

The technician will cleanse the area and may apply a pre-wax oil or powder to protect your skin. Then comes the waxing itself. They’ll work in sections, applying wax to a small area, placing the strip, and removing it quickly. The key is to keep breathing – holding your breath makes you tense up, which makes it hurt more.

After each section, the technician will apply pressure to the area, which helps calm the nerve endings and reduce discomfort. Once an area is complete, they’ll check for any stray hairs and tweeze them if necessary.

When the waxing is complete, a soothing lotion or gel is applied to calm the skin and reduce redness. The whole process is quicker than most people expect – even a full leg wax rarely takes more than an hour.

Immediate Aftercare

Right after waxing, your skin will be red and might have small bumps – this is completely normal and usually subsides within a few hours. Some areas, like the upper lip or bikini area, might stay red longer. Ice packs can help if you’re particularly sensitive.

For the first 24-48 hours, baby your skin. Avoid hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms – heat can irritate freshly waxed skin. Skip the gym too – sweat can lead to breakouts in waxed areas. No swimming in pools or hot tubs where bacteria might cause infection in opened follicles.

Avoid tight clothing on waxed areas. If you’ve had a Brazilian or bikini wax, cotton underwear is your friend. Synthetic fabrics can trap bacteria and cause irritation or ingrown hairs.

Don’t apply any harsh products to waxed areas for at least 48 hours. No retinoids, acids, or strong fragrances. A gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer is fine and actually helpful for keeping skin soft.

Preventing Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs are the enemy of smooth skin. They happen when hair grows back but curls into the skin instead of growing out of the follicle. They’re more common in areas where hair is coarse or curly, like the bikini area.

Starting 48 hours after waxing, gentle exfoliation can help prevent ingrowns. Use an exfoliating mitt or gentle scrub in circular motions. Don’t go crazy – aggressive scrubbing can irritate skin and make things worse.

Keep skin moisturized. Dry skin can trap hairs beneath the surface. Our natural herbal formula from Hawaii with Vitamin A and Bisabolol, along with 12 botanical and organic ingredients nourishes, calms, hydrates, soothes, and protects delicate skin and helps keep follicles clear.

If you do get an ingrown, resist the urge to dig it out with tweezers – this can lead to scarring and infection. Instead, apply a warm compress to soften the skin, gently exfoliate, and use a product designed for ingrown hairs. If it becomes infected or doesn’t resolve, see a professional.

The Waxing Schedule

For optimal results, you want to wax regularly before all the hair has fully grown back. This keeps hair in the same growth cycle, leading to better results and less discomfort over time. For most areas, every 4-6 weeks is ideal. Facial areas might need attention every 3-4 weeks, while legs might last 6 weeks.

Regular waxing has cumulative benefits. The hair follicles weaken over time, producing finer, sparser hair. Some clients who’ve been waxing for years find they can go longer between appointments because there’s simply less hair growing back.

Special Considerations for Arizona

Living in Gilbert means dealing with some unique waxing challenges. Our intense sun means you need to be extra careful about sun exposure on freshly waxed skin. The skin is more photosensitive after waxing, so diligent SPF use is crucial to prevent hyperpigmentation.

Our dry climate can make skin more prone to irritation after waxing. Extra moisturizing is important, and you might find you need to be more gentle with exfoliation than someone in a humid climate.

Pool season is practically year-round here, which means many clients maintain regular waxing schedules even through winter. The good news is that consistent waxing means each session gets easier and the results better.

Why Professional Waxing Matters

I’ve heard horror stories about at-home waxing disasters – burns from too-hot wax, bruising from improper technique, missed patches, and even skin lifting. Professional waxing at Raise The Bar means proper temperature control, correct technique, professional-grade wax, and an experienced technician who can work quickly and efficiently.

We also maintain strict sanitation standards. No double-dipping (the applicator never goes back in the wax pot after touching skin), fresh strips for each client, and properly sanitized spaces. Your health and safety are paramount.

Our pricing is transparent and reasonable, from $20 for a simple brow wax to $65 for a Brazilian. When you factor in the weeks of smooth skin and the time saved not shaving daily, professional waxing is an investment in convenience and confidence.

Embracing the Smooth Life

There’s something empowering about choosing waxing. You’re choosing longer-lasting results over daily maintenance. You’re choosing smooth skin over stubble. You’re choosing to take control of your body hair on your terms.

Whether you’re a waxing veteran or considering your first appointment, Raise The Bar Med Spa is here to make your experience as comfortable and effective as possible.
