Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.
  • You will have a consult with your provider prior to injection to discuss your cosmetic goals and determine the best approach to meet your needs.
  • If you have had a recent illness, fever, cold, flu, rash, infection (of the treatment area), please reschedule your appointment. 
  • Please schedule your treatment at least 1-2 weeks prior to upcoming events (i.e. photoshoot, wedding, etc). You will encounter bruising, redness and/or swelling to the treatment area, plan accordingly. 
  • Discontinue the use of anti-inflammatory drugs (steroidal and non-steroidal) such as: Aspirin (if prescribed by a provider please get medical clearance), Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, etc. 7 days prior to your treatment. 
  • If you are taking or have been taking systemic corticosteroids within the past 2 weeks, you will need to consult your prescribing provider for approval to discontinue use to receive treatment. 
  • Discontinue blood thinning agents such as alcohol, vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, and Essential Fatty Acids, and multivitamins, a minimum of 7 days (preferably 14 days) prior to treatment. It is fine to continue iron and vitamin D. 
  • Avoid chemical peels, waxing, electrolysis or laser treatments to the treatment area for 2 weeks prior to treatment. 

Pre Treatment Care Instructions 

Sclerotherapy

PLEASE DO:  
  • Maintain compression in the area for 1-3 days upon what was discussed in office.
  • Walk for at least 30-60 minutes per day for 1 week to prevent the formation of blood clots, but avoid strenuous exercise for 1 week.
  • It is expected to have redness and swelling around the treated veins for 1-2 days with associated with redness, itching and burning that may improve with over-the-counter Benadryl or Claritin. 

PLEASE AVOID
  • UV exposure to the treated areas to avoid discolorations.
  • Hot baths, jacuzzis or saunas for 5 days post procedure.
  • Lotions for 24-48 hours.
  • Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E, ibuprofen, etc) for 3 days post procedure (ask your provider first if these are prescribed medications).

Post Treatment Care Instructions 

  • Treated areas may be slightly red, swollen, slightly irregular and bruised for the first 2-5 days.  
  • Slight discomfort in the first 24-48 hours post treatment is normal and will gradually resolve. 
  • If you notice a thread protruding from your skin, redness or bumps around the insertion site or a puckering of the skin in the treated area, please contact your provider. 
  • You will have immediate results; however, full results of your treatment take 4-6 weeks. Please wait until the full 6 weeks before assessing the results of your treatment.  
  • If you have any questions or concerns, never hesitate to reach out to your provider or the clinic at any time via phone, text or video chat.  
  • A 2-week post treatment follow up via in-person or photo-virtual follow up is recommended. 

Contact the Office Immediately if any of the Following Signs of Infection Occur: 
  • Drainage – looks like pus from the treatment area. 
  • Increased warmth at or around the treated area. 
  • Fever of 101.5 or greater. 
  • Severe pain that is unresponsive to over-the-counter pain relievers.
